EMPLOYEE MOTIVATION IN AN ORGANIZATIONAL CONTEXT…

Motivation is a psychological process that moves a person towards a goal. It is very important since all our behaviors, actions, thoughts and beliefs are influenced by an inner drive to succeed.
According to Armstrong, “motivation is concerned with the factors that influence people to behave in certain ways” Amstrong(2006)
In an organizational level, motivation is commonly used to achieve a high level of performance through their employees. It is not an easy process, since the needs of people, are personalized and hard to satisfy all equally. It is the responsibility of the management to identify the needs of different people and the motivational method to be applied to get maximum output from the employees.
According to Maslow (1954), everyone is motivated to satisfy five basic needs and he has aligned those in a hierarchy. When it comes to an organizational level, different types of motivational tools have to be used in different stages of employment to motivate employees.

For examples, if management wants to motivate a newly recruited person, they could offer him a reasonable basic salary plus allowances, when it comes to employee’s scenario, he expects job security and permanency of employment, for permanent employees they are in the stage of belonging needs such as friendly management and peers etc. For esteem needs, employees should be recognized for their achievements, for self-actualization needs, employees are in need of growth and development of their careers.  The motivational strategy should not be common for all employees and one of the failures of current business atmospheres is the weaknesses of identifying correct motivational strategies and tools to be applied according to the situation and personalized behaviors of employees.

As identified by Herzberg et al (1957) motivation can be divided into two types.
MOTIVATION
Intrinsic Motivation
Extrinsic Motivation
No need of external influences.
External influence required.
Motivation arises from within
Motivation arises from outside.
Long term effectiveness
Short term effectiveness.
Does not depend on additional benefits/ facts
Depends of increments, bonuses, promotions and sometimes punishments and disciplinary actions.

Extrinsic motivation can be used to motivate some people in some instances and it mainly concerns about external factors like rewards, monetary befits, promotions, punishments etc. In some instances, people have no desire to engage with specific activities. Unnecessary rewards may be problematic, but extrinsic motivators can be used appropriately, as a useful motivational tool.

At an organizational level, intrinsic motivation is more beneficial than extrinsic motivation in long term planning.  The loyal and voluntary workforce is an asset and investment for an organization. Employers should focus more attention on improving intrinsic motivation among employees by using methods such as recognition; get the participation of employees in decision making, regular feedbacks, and appreciations etc.

  6. The assumptions of scientific management were that work is inherently unpleasant for most people and the money they earn is more important to employees than is the nature of the job they are performing. This view assumes that people want to contribute to organizational effectiveness and are able to make genuine contributions. The organization's responsibility is to create a work environment that makes full use of available human resources.

    1. The power of the human resource of an organization has to be utilized in full for tremendous performances.
This can be done through building and increasing the willingness of employees to work. Motivation is the tool that is commonly used to create this self-willingness of employees in an organizational context.
